As displaying my collages as an object became an option, I have decided that I might want to add either a pattern or a texture to the back of my collages to recreate the effect of flowers being wrapped up in either plain paper or patterned cellophane.I wanted to include this detail as I wanted to touch on the atmosphere and surroundings in which these flowers are displayed in. Therefore, it is very important to me that the way the flower themselves are presented in a bouquet gets conveyed one way or another through my work.
I have decided to start with painting patterns of foliages found in the florists I have entered. I have chosen to paint the foliage instead of the flower themselves as flowers are usually surrounded by foliage when in a bouquet , and as I am basing my collages on flowers, I feel that it would only be appropriate if I "surround" my collages in foliage patterns as well.
I then took these paintings into photoshop and made them into patterns. I really like how both looked however I do prefer the pattern on the left as I feel that there are wide variety of foliage to chose from in the florists and as the painting include multiple shades of green and blue, I am able to accurately represent these foliage.
However, looking at the patterns, even though I do really like how the small scale represents the vast options of foliage to choose from. I wanted to see whether or not these patterns will work better on a bigger scale.
I do feel that these patterns in particular work better on a bigger scale. Not only for design purposes, but foliage is often added to a bouquet to enhance the beauty of the flowers therefore a smaller pattern may distract too much from the collages. With this idea, I have decided to go ahead a print the both patterns out and try them against my collages to see whether they work or not.
At first, I felt that I would like to adhere the patterns on the back of the collages, however when discussed with Neil about it, because I wanted them to be interactive, by adhering both together, it would limit people who are interacting with my objects from placing the collages where they see fit.
