Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Southern Netherlands, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison. I am really inspired by his botany illustrations as they were such delicate drawings that were able to perfectly reflect and bring across the various textures and delicateness of each flower. Although I am basing this project of the humane side of the flowers, I still think that there is much to learn from the way Redouté uses his composition, the element of text and the overall feel of his illustration.
What I really liked about his illustrations were the strong yet simple way he was able to convey the flowers and their various textures onto paper and even though his illustrations have ample amount of shadows and depth, they still maintain an once of delicateness.
In my practice, I will aim to achieve the same delicateness Redouté was able to and I think bringing forward the element of text and type would enhance my work very well in the future.
