Pattern design

After experimenting with drawing and painting plants and flowers, I started to notice a sort of pattern forming within my paintings and therefore decided to create patterns from the materials gathered on site as I felt that patterns would furthermore highlight the fact that these flowers are surrounded by these leaves out in nature and therefore give a glimpse of the environment prior to the florists, also back in the victorian era, flowers were used quite a lot to decorate interiors like curtains and carpets. Therefore by creating patterns from these flowers, I am able to represent and recreate how the illlustrations may be used in the olden days.

I decided to create the first pattern as I really felt that by limiting the amount of flowers I place on the page, the flowers stood out more and therefore lend itself quite well to what I was trying to achieve. In the end, I went for a more simple design instead of the traditional detailed illustration as I felt that the flowers and the leaves were so delicate themselves and therefore didn't want to add too much depth and shadow to them. Furthermore, I wanted my editorial to come across as light-hearted and outlining these designs would not give such effect.

However, I felt that I wanted to edit my composition more and really boil down all the details therefore I decided to create this pattern purely out of leaves. I really liked how the various colours of the leaves represented the various types of plants out at the plantation however, I felt that the design itself just wasn't interesting enough and the leaves didn't have such impact when blown to such size.

Therefore I decided to take what I have learnt from doing these two patterns and create mock ups of what may look good in my booklet.

Since I decided I liked how the leaves look on a smaller scale, I decided to use them to outline of embellish instead and use flowers on the front and back cover. I also decided to experiment a little bit with gold as it gave my illustrations a more sophisticated look that would tie to the fact that flowers were mostly gifted by higher class people in the Victorian Era.
