On the next day, we had a look at our teepees and really thought about what we wanted them to represent/say. Remembering back to what William Golding's views on human nature was, we decided to carved every twig end into a spear in order to suggest the idea that every character had a violent side to them. After referring back to the novel, we also decided to dip the ends of some of the teepees in order to represent the idea of marking territory and how some boys ended up with blood on their hands by the end of the novel however initially, we wanted to dip half in white suggesting innocence and half in red. However, we felt that that would be giving away too much information therefore we ended up using only red.
At first, when we saw how streaky the paint dried, we wanted to go out and buy thicker paint that would allow us to (1) create a straight top and (2) make the paint dry opaque. However, after talking to Emily about it, we decided against the idea as opaque, neat looking paint may go against the rustic look that we are trying to achieve with our teepees.
We really like how these teepees turned out however, with both masking tape and the red-dipped ends, we felt like there were just too much going on. Therefore, we decided to ditch the masking tape and go for elastic bands that blends in with the twigs.
Another element of our instalment that we had to think about was lighting. Should we use lights on either side of the instalment or only one? What colour should the light be?. Initially, we wanted to shine two lights on opposite sides of the instalment with one shinning red light and one, white. We decided to test out the red light to get an idea of what shapes of are created by the twigs and whether or not placing the light closer to the teepees made any difference.
As you can see, by placing the light very close, virtually underneath the teepees, the shadows produced on the wall behind appeared darker and more crisp than if we were to place our light further away. This experiment helped us to decided where to place our lights in order to create a range of different shadows.
The rest of the day is then dedicated to finishing our teepees in preparation for our instalment.
As a last minute idea, we also decided to carve spears from the leftover twigs in order to represent the weapons of the boys and indicate a new civilisation formed amongst them with some spears being taller than others suggesting dominance and one partially tall one that represents Ralph.
