Revising Installation Idea

On thursday, our group gave a presentation on what we had in mind for our instalment. Overall, our idea seems to be well perceived by everyone however, there were a few things that weren't so popular.
One of the point that people didn't understand were the connection between our installation and the novel. Initially as the Golding was very clear in what he believed human nature to be, we decided to create an instalment with one colour. We then went on to looking at Japanese artists that are very well known for their installations. This is where we went wrong. As we looked at these artists and their very clean, polished work, we forgot that the main element in the novel were kids therefore our mock up ended being too sophisticated and therefore misrepresented out characters.
Our tutor also pointed out that what worked well during our previous workshops were our playfulness and in a way rustic approach to the novel and therefore it would be better to approach the instalment in the same way. For example, instead of stiffening the linen with corn starch and PVA, we should just hang our linen by ropes ( similar to what children will do ) as children wouldn't have known of such technique and therefore the installation may end up looking too stiff.
One of the things that was very popular amongst other students were our video we made during our Text, Script, Sound workshop therefore we were thinking of including it in our installation after all.
With the feedback still fresh in our mind, we decided to separate and each come up with an idea then discuss it on upcoming Monday.
In my brainstorm, I wanted to focus on the feedbacks given and how I could take them into account in thinking about the instalment.
I also wanted to focus more on the intent of Golding and what message(s) he wanted Lord of the Flies to convey to his readers. One of the most famous quotes from Golding about this novel is
'The boys try to construct a civilisation on the island; but it breaks down in blood and terror because the boys are suffering from the terrible disease of being human.'
The part of the quote that I found most interesting is '..disease of being human'. I wanted to explore this idea more as I can certainly feel it when reading the novel. From this quote, I then went on to think more on how I can bring across this idea in the installation.
Another idea that was very prominent in throughout the novel was the idea that mother nature will always win in the end, that nature trumps man.
These pictures are pictures of a series of frames made by Darryl Cox, Jr. I found these to be particularly interesting as I really like how the frame looks like it is reverting back to its original form. An object that was shaped by man returning to nature.
